Geyser eggs are found in and around vents of an eruptive alkali chloride, high-temperature hot springs. Siliceous sinter geyser eggs form as amorphous silica (opal-A) accumulates in concentric layers around a nucleus to form a smooth pebble-like structure. The formation of a geyser egg is not well understood.
The extent of hyperthermophilic microbial diversity associated with siliceous sinter (geyserite) was characterized in seven near-boiling silica-depositing springs throughout Yellowstone National Park using environmental PCR amplification of small-subunit rRNA genes (SSU rDNA), large-subunit rDNA, and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS).
Our ongoing field and lab studies are intended provide a robust assessment of the biogenicity of the micro-digitate silica structures and other aspects of El Tatio silica sinter deposits and test their viability as direct analogs to similar features found among the Home Plate silica deposits on Mars. 
This case occurs around geysers as the periodic nature of their eruptions allows sufficient time for the water to fully evaporate prior to the subsequent eruption (Fig. 5a). Precipitation of silica is promoted by the evaporation process. In New Zealand, where our sinter samples were collected, evaporation of the water was rapid (< 20 s).
